NAIVASHA, Kenya. Kenyan police yesterday intercepted a government-registered vehicle laden with weapons and campaign posters of President Mwai Kibaki.

They recovered several machetes, bows and arrows as well as whips from the vehicle at a road block near the Rift Valley town of Naivasha, about 90 kilometres northwest of the capital, said area deputy police commander Grace Kakai.

"Someone in Nairobi knew of the whole deal and tipped us moments after the car left the capital city," said another police official who requested to remain unnamed.

Campaigning is hotting up in Kenya ahead of December 27 general elections.

Several people were injured across the country during last week’s parliamentary primaries that saw

multiple allegations of electoral malpractice.

Since July, at least 20 people have been reported killed in election-related violence, according to the state-run Kenya

National Commission for Human Rights.

The elections have been billed as the tightest ever, pitting Kibaki against one-time ally Raila Odinga, the current opinion polls leader, and former foreign minister Kalonzo Musyoka. — AFP.
