PARALYMPIC Gold medalist Eliot Mujaji has been included in the provisional team for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games to be held in August.
Elliot Mujaji The Shabanie mine athlete, who successfully defended his gold medal at the 2004 Sydney Olympic Games, is part of an enlarged Zimbabwean team of 23 athletes released by the Sports and recreation Commission (SRC). Remigious Mumbire will coach the athletics team with Peter Mahwindo is the team manager. Announcing the squad, SRC said the provisional team of 23 athletes will be teamed in due course, but unlike in the past, they will be sending a bigger team. “In the past we used to send Mujaji only, but this is now a thing of the past following the setting up of the interim Zimbabwe Paralympics Committee (ZPC). "All along we did not have an organization that deals specifically with the Paralympic Games and that is why in the past we used to send only Elliot Mujaji. The athletes will soon start preparing for the games very soon with finances coming from the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC),” said SRC Director for Development Joseph Muchechetere. Muchechetere added that they will be expecting more medals given that they are sending an enlarged team.
“This time we have quite a number of athletes and I believe a number of medals are on our way. We have added disciplines such as wheelchair athletics, athletics for the visually impaired, and goal ball,” he said. Muchechetere added that their ultimate goal will be to see the newly born ZPC operating in tandem with the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee. “We expect more medals this time around as we will be sending a much bigger team. The final team will be announced in early July,” he said. Apart from Mujaji, the Zimbabwean team expects medals from wheel chair athlete Elford Moyo who will be competing in the T54 category. Moyo has had a fantastic season this year and could cap it with a medal at the Games. Mujaji won a gold medal at the 2004 Sydney Games held in Australia which won him a trip with the first family to Malaysia.
