FORMER Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chief Executive Officer Chris Sambo has said the $4.5trillion sponsorship deal signed between the league and CBZ is favorable to teams based in Harare.
Sambo said Harare based teams have less travelling to do as there are now more teams in the capital. "The sponsorship structure favors teams based in Harare in terms of costs as they are going to do less travelling. If you look at the number of games Dynamos is going to play, you will realize that a larger percentage of their matches is at home even if they will be playing Kiglon at Chibuku Stadium," he said. Premier Soccer League Sambo added that the league should have worked the amount of travelling the team is going to do in the season before coming up with a final figure for the winners.
If Sundowns were to win the championship, they are unlikely to benefit compared to a situation where Dynamos or any Harare based team were to win. The only game that clubs such as Highlanders, Sundowns play which are nearer will be against Chapungu in Gweru and when they play against each other. “Such a disparity will spill into the pitch as some clubs will have money to pay their players while other clubs will have used it on the road,” he said. Harare has more than eight clubs, which uses Gwanzura and Dzivarasekwa as their home ground. The other team is Kiglon, which uses Chibuku Stadium. This mean that most teams based in the capital city enjoys a numerical advantage over others, as they do not have to do the travelling.
Under the sponsorship deal, champions will pocket $300billion depending on the investment, but the amount will remain a quarter of the sponsorship package reserved for the prize money. Every club received $50billion, the equivalent amount that was scheduled to go to the team occupying position 16. Each club also received two sets of uniforms a home stripe and an away stripe by the same sponsors. The kits for the 16 teams cost about $1.4trillion while CBZ pour $5billion into junior football development. The Soccer Star of the Year Finalist, the player monthly awards, the golden boot, the referee of the Year and coach of the year will consume some of the funds set aside for the sponsorship. A further $35billion will go towards the Soccer Star of the banquet while $15billion has been set aside for the selection of the best players. |
