THAT it took the Glamour Boys, as Dynamos are affectionately known as, 10years to lift the Premiership title is not a secret.
Not only has the club won the Premiership title, but they have also won the CBZ FA Cup, the major knockout tournament in the country. To cap it all, the most popular team in the land had four of their players being chosen among the eleven best players, Justice Majabvi, Willard Manyathela,, for the 2007 CBZ Premiership season. And the man who presided over this is none other than one of the team’s most illustrious sons, David “Yogi” Mandigora. Many will remember two years ago that he was appointed much to the consternation of many a Dynamos supporter. No one would want to have been in Mandigora’s shoes then, for his task seemed an insurmountable one, to break Highlanders’ hegemonic hold on the championship. Back then; morale in the camp was at its lowest ebb with the team having just survived relegation by, a whisker under the guidance of the gap-toothed mentor Moses Chunga. Mandigora’s task was an insurmountable one, what with a situation of having to take over a team made up of near average player and supporters who treated him with skepticism. Many a Dynamos fan doubted the Mandigora’s credibility to lead Dynamos to glory and at one time the axe hovered above his head.
At soccer matches Dynamos fans did not hesitate to make their intentions known as they took every given opportunity to hurl insults at the bald-headed coach, instructing him on who to substitute and not to substitute. However, in just two years, Mandigora, who never misses an opportunity to puff his favorite cigar, has silenced his critics. But, even after leading the most popular club to victory, Dynamos fans still regard Mandigora with skepticism. However, the question that continues to hover in many a supporter’s mind is, does glory belong to Mandigora? Many supporters are still skeptical about Mandigora’s credibility even after leading the team to glory. “We have achieved our goal, but I still do not feel “Yogi” is the right person to coach the club. He just does the clout to coach Dynamos,” said one Dynamos fan. Another fan attributed Dynamos’ victory to sheer lucky; “Mandigora is just a lucky guy. Unlike in the previous seasons, Dynamos had talented and motivated players who had the zeal to win. Any coach would have won the championship with the players that we have,” said Chamunorwa Madondo of Mufakose. Another Dynamos fan, who identified himself as Terrence attributed Dynamos’ triumph to lack of competition in the league. “Standards have gone terribly down in the league to say the least. Save for Highlanders, no team gave Dynamos any competition,” he said. Such is the cruelty of life. Will Mandigora, who led DeMbare to their first championship in ten years go the way Jack White, the South African Springboks coach went after leading his team to World Cup victory? Time, the magician will tell. |
