FINALLY after ten years of failing to win the cup title, Dynamos were crowned the 2007 league champions on Sunday.

Zimbabwe: Dynamos FC
Zimbabwe: Dynamos FC
The Harare soccer greats have made it a double by also winning the CBZ FA Cup a week ago in a game they played Highlanders in Bulawayo and the joy and jubilation among its fans could not go unnoticed. Lorries could be seen moving at high speeds in the ghettos with the hooters on and blue and white flags danced to the force of the wind. My young cousin could not suppress his excitement as he ran through the streets in our hood with a Dynamos flag tied on his head. Such has been the hunger for glory from the Dynamos fans that the Sunday outcome was one long waited for event.

Dynamos won by 2 goals to nil against Shooting stars. This means that the giants have won the Premier League with two more games to go. Monomotapa United thumped rivals Highlanders who needed a win to keep the hopes of winning the Premier League ablaze for them. Had they won on Sunday, it would have meant that its chances to win the league with two more games to go were high. On the other hand, a win for Dynamos means that even if they are to loose the last two games before them, they are already the 2007 champions. This has made fans gain trust in coach David “Yogi” Mandigora after having started on a stressing note when he took charge of the team last season. Fans were accusing him of lacking the required skills to lead the biggest team in the land and earlier defeats nearly saw him being thrown to the gutter. Winning the Premier League and the CBZ FA Cup means Dynamos do qualify to represent the country in the African Champions League as well as the CAF Confederations Cup. Being the only Zimbabwean team that to have made it to the finals of this African soccer showcase, the fans of this team believe it can do better this time around.

This though does not go down well with other soccer lovers as they believe the current Dynamos team is weak as compared to that of the Sunday Chidzambwa era which made it to the finals of the African Champions League. As some are saying, this means Mandigora has to do more than he did this season if Dynamos are going to have a meaningful and worthwhile show at the greatest African soccer competition.

All said and done, the Dynamos players have to be commented for their eagerness to bring back the glory to the club even though they were having misunderstandings with their management over outstanding bonuses. The players went into Sunday’s game with queries over the amount they had been promised as winning bonuses from lifting the CBZ FA Cup title. The management had given the players $5 billion as winning bonus when the players wanted $7 billion.
