A CLOUD of
uncertainty hangs over the scheduled 12 round Global Boxing Union
title fight pitting Zimbabwe’s heavyweight boxer Thamsanqa
Dube and Francis “Galagata” Zulu as Oriental Quarries,
the promoters of the fight – are failing to raise the
required K100million required.
The fight, which is going to
be a curtain raiser to the Africa Boxing Union heavyweight bout
featuring Zambia’s Joseph Chingangu and Orsborne Machimana of
South Africa, is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Woodlands
Stadium in Lusaka.
Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP)
have a shortfall of K108 million to successfully host the June 21
African Boxing Union (ABU) heavyweight bout between Joseph
‘No Pressure’ Chingangu and Osborne Machimana of South
Africa.
Oriental Quarries director of operations
Chris Malunga said the organizers had a deficit of K108 million
from their initial budget of K300 million.
"I am appealing to business houses to come
on board and fill the deficit of the budget," Malunga said.
He announced that the same day will see
Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions honoring ABU president Houcine
Houichi, African commissioner for the Global Boxing Union (GBU) and
Women International Boxing Federation (WIBF) Caleb Kuya and former
national boxing coach Vincent Mudenda.
Also to be honored are Lottie
'Gunduzani' Mwale, Chisanda Mutti, Charm 'Shuffle' Chiteule,
John 'Big Joe' Sichula, Felix 'Hammer' Bwalya and Keith Mwila
The ABU president is expected to arrive on June
19 together with two other judges Lillian Orero of Kenya and Andrew
Smale of South Africa.
However, Zimbabwe Boxing Board of Control
secretary Patrick Mukondiwa said Dube is unmoved with the latest
development and is preparing for the fight in Zambia.
“Dube is already in Zambia where he is preparing
for the bout against Zulu. We are optimistic that the promoters
will overcome the problems they are facing,” he
said.
Dube, who has lost only two of his 14
fights, shares the same trainer with Joseph Chingangu who knocked
him down in the fight last year.
It is this ghost the Bulawayo born
pugilist will be hoping to exorcise when he takes to the ring
against Zulu.
The two pugilists were supposed to have
fought in 2006, but the fight had to be cancelled after Dube
refused to accept the USD300 that was being offered by the
promoters. |
