ZIMBABWE women soccer team coach, Moses Chunga, yesterday lamented the team’s poor preparations ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Zambia played over the weekend.
Chunga, whose charges saw off the challenge of the Chipolopolo Queens, said there could have been a better performance from the players if they had had adequate preparations. “I am impressed by the players’ performance, but I believe more could have been done. The girls only trained for one week and that is not adequate to prepare for an international match." “You could see that the players are talented, they lacked match fitness. It is my hope that the preparations were better as we go into the second leg,” he said.
He urged the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) to ensure that the players get adequate preparations for forthcoming games. “The games are going to get tougher as we progress. If we prevail over Zambia we will meet South Africans and these are no easy opponents,” he said. Chunga, however, remained optimistic that the Mighty Warriors will qualify for the finals of the Nations Cup. “The talent is there. What we only need is the right attitude ahead of the matches. We have the players who can do the job and what we only need to do is to provide the resources,” said the former Warriors captain. His sentiments were echoed by Women soccer boss Cecilia Gombe who said a lot still needs to be done if the nation was going to reclaim their tag as one of the best in Africa. “I believe we are second to none in southern Africa only if we have adequate preparations. South Africans are said to be the best team in Southern Africa only because they have the resource. In terms of talent, we are better equipped,” she said. Zimbabwe prevailed over Zambia in a lukewarm encounter through goals from Aldigrade Bhamu, Nomsa Moyo and precious Mpala while Zambians pulled one back through Martha Kapombo. |
