The ZANU PF party has embarked on a massive campaign to convince Southern African and western nations, to allow a Chinese arms ship to dock, so as to unload weapons destined for Zimbabwe- acquired by the ruling party.
South Africa Demostrators Against Arms Shipment To Zimbabwe. Speaking and fuming on national radio and in state newspapers, the party spokespersons, ministers and sympathisers say there is nothing unusual in Zimbabwe acquiring weapons anytime and from anywhere. The vocal turned Parliamentary and Legal Affairs Minister, Patrick Chinamasa early this week, confirmed the arms on the ship belong to the Zimbabwean government, and were acquired last year. “They are only being delivered now, and there is nothing wrong with that,” he said. The Chinese arms ships was refused to dock in South Africa, Mozambique and reportedly in Angola and Namibia after the Southern African Development Community (SADC) leader and Zambian president Levi Mwanawasa intervened. Britain is also said to have pressured Angola not to allow the ship to dock and offload the weapons. The ship is currently stranded and might be recalled.
The ship- An Yue Jiang is carrying 77 tonnes of weaponry consisting of AK47 ammunition, rocket propelled grenades and mortars, all supplied by Chinese arms manufacturer Poly Technologies. The government says the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party has taken advantage of the situation, and spreading lies to the international community.
“The MDC says the weapons on the ship are to be used in cracking down on the opposition, especially in the expected presidential election run-off.” “It is a disgrace and shame as Zimbabwe is a sovereign nation with the right to defend itself, especially from other countries,” said a government official. “The ZANU PF party is currently suffering an unnecessary media onslaught because of this Chinese ship.” SADC, United Nations and the international community, especially Britain and the United State of America fear Mugabe might use the weapons against civilians. Mugabe- who is believed to have lost to the MDC’s Morgan Tsvangirai is currently holding on to the election results, and buying time in a vote re-count- which is also said to be not in his favour. A staunch ruling party commentator and analyst known as Ngugi says Britain wants to revenge because of the land reform programme conducted by the government some years back. “Now, they are taking it as a storm in a cup. The MDC and its western allies are jealous that many blacks now have their own land, which was taken away from the whites,” he said.
Sources indicated Mugabe and his party were waiting for the arms to arrive in the country before they can announce the presidential poll results, fuelling fear that the aging leader might want to rig the election and use force to make people accept him to get into power. Ngugi said the MDC is currently pushing the arms ship and the Zimbabwean situation issues to have them put on the United Nations security agenda. “They say the weapons are going to be used to unleash terror on the opposition supporters. This is unnecessary.” “The spotlight and media coverage of the Chinese arms ship has been exaggerated. Zimbabwe is not the only country that purchases weapons in the world,” he concluded. However, Mugabe’s rival political parties and the rest of Zimbabweans are still worried because ZANU PF might use one of the over 32 ports available in Africa to offload the arms. The party may also use a plane to get the weapons in the country. |
