Barely a week after he said that there was no need for his committee to ask for names of big names involved in cash baroning, the chairman of the portfolio committee that sees on finance David Butau is on the hunt by police.

David Batau
David Butau: On the run for foreign currency and corruption questioning!
Two days ago the police made a report on the national broadcaster that they were inviting Butau for questioning over issues to do with foreign currency and corruption. Butau who is said to be on the run was politely invited on air to come to the police offices as soon as he could. Reserve bank Governor Gideon Gono in his speech on national television last week said he was willing to name the people involved in corrupt cash deals to the parliament portfolio committee headed by Butau. To the surprise of many Butau came out in the state owned Herald saying that there was no real need for his committee to ask for names from the governor, a statement that irked Gono. Gono was in turn quoted as saying he was amazed by the legislator’s sentiments as in most cases his willingness to say names involved in corruption was an open invitation to Butau’s committee to hear the names.

However barely three days after saying this statement in the press, Butau is on the run and is being hunted by the police.

“We kindly ask you Honourable Butau wherever you are to report to the police fraud division for questioning over issues to do with foreign currency as soon as possible,” read part of the press statement that was aired.

His disappearance comes also barely two days after a lady was arrested in Harare after being found with $10b worth of $500 000 new bearer notes. These notes were released on the market last Friday and how the lady could have had as much cash is something the police are trying to find. The lady though is said to have linked the money to one high official she was working in cahoots with.

Gono made a statement on television last week that was so full of anger after he said he had found out what was causing the cash shortages in Zimbabwe. He said much of the corruption was linked to high ranking officials in government and he was willing to say them out if asked to by the portfolio committee headed by Butau. Gono also made it clear that this time he was not going to remove more zeros as business people were advising him to do. “They want me to remove more zeros so that they can raise prices of commodities at will. This time I am not going to remove them and if their machines cannot cope with the zeros anymore, they should go the manual way,” he said. If democracy and rule of law would find its way into Zimbabwe big heads are set to roll in the ruling government as it is well known what they are up to with regards corruption.

Gono has on numerous occasions gone against some policies being taken by the government that include the recent price blitz that made the situation in Zimbabwe even worse than it was. If one was to scrutinize most of his speeches, they reveal most of the things that he does not agree with that the present government do embark on.
