As is always the case every election time, politicians come to the people with all types of goodies to win their hearts and this year had its fair share.

In the run up to the Election Day I saw the MDC Mutambara faction collecting rubbish that was piling up at shops due to uncollected rubbish by local authorities and they were playing songs that were in praise of Simba Makoni. Later on the group which had with it a small lorry to carry the rubbish started beating a drum singing praises to Simba Makoni. In Central Harare, Makoni’s people moved around giving people cardboard sunhats and calendars written Vote Simba Makoni thus taking their campaign a step further.

“We took the calendars and caps with great pleasure because this is what we have been looking forward to all these years. How nice it is for politicians to campaign peacefully without the use of violonce,” said a lady we talked to who works for a petroleum company that was visited by Makoni’s people.

“When they came at our work place everybody was scrambling for the caps and calendars and in the area where my company is, it was all yellow,” went the lady.

Yellow is the colour being used by Simba Makoni which depicts the sun and therefore means a new day coming Zimbabwe’s way. Some Zanu PF candidates were selling scarce commodities to those in the voters’ role at cheap prices as a gesture of goodwill. In Chitungwiza Zanu PF candidate Christopher Chigumba was selling mealie meal and cooking oil at very cheap prices to would be voters. In Zengeza Fredrick Mabamba who also happens to be a Zanu PF went around giving people on the voters’ role 1kg of salt each. However most that got this salt were complaining that even though they can not resist these free things, can they eat salt alone when they do not have mealie meal or cooking oil on their tables.

Nothing much did I see of the Morgan Tsvangirai’s faction of the MDC as to what they did for the people as a gesture of goodwill but their members could be seen daily freely campaigning and singing praises of their leader. This year the campaigning environment has been so peaceful as compared to the past when Mugabe’s supporters would lash out at any MDC supporter they got in contact with.
“Mashura chaiwo gore rino kusvika this time pasina kurovana,” Miriam Samkange of Harare said. A tout we talked to in Harare said that this year there was no point in fighting each other anymore. “I do admit that earlier on we would be used by the ruling party to go around harassing people but not this time. Who is not suffering and who has the time to go around troubling people in a democratic society like ours,” said the tout.

This year Zanu PF partly dropped its empty promises style of campaigning they used to do like in Chitungwiza whereby in every election the residents would be told, “we want to built a railway line for you linking you to Harare,” but it would just end like that. Again it is the hope of many that these gestures of goodwill coming from the politicians should not only end soon as they get the vote of the people but if they get to be in power, they continue doing good.

Was it a GOOD idea for the MDC to drop out of the run-off elections?
