A former prosecutor who claims he was forced to resign after by people opposed to his move to prosecute state security minister Didymus Mutasa and his justice counterpart Patrick Chinamasa on charges of trying to obstruct the course of justice has formed a political party.
Levison Chikafu, the former Area Public Prosecutor for Mutare, at the weekend launched the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and vowed to use radical means to stop President Mugabe from serving another term. “The country can not afford to have Mugabe in office again. We have to stop this man from continuing to destroy our country.
“We will tackle ZANU PF head on because that is the only way we can deal with these people,” said Chikafu who is the LDP interim chairman. Earlier this year Chikafu caused an uproar after he ordered that Patrick Chinamasa, the justice minister, be dragged before the courts to answer charges of trying to obstruct the course of justice. During the sensational trial Chikafu also sought to bring to book Didymus Mutasa, the feared security minister before the courts for interfering with witnesses during Chinamasa’s trial. Chikafu told the court during the trial that Mutasa’s wings needed to be clipped “to the greatest extend”. Chikafu says he paid for his bravery by having in trumped up theft and corruption charges being leveled against him. Meanwhile, political commentators have once again reiterated that the best way of beating ZANU PF during next year’s elections is to present a united front arguing that efforts such as the one Chikafu is undertaking, although welcome, will only give the ruling party the edge. National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) chairman Dr Lovemore Madhuku is also of the opinion that a new constitution is a pre-requisite for a free and fair election. “A united front is the best way to go about it because having several opposition parties will give ZANU PF the advantage as it will split the voice. But the most important thing is to have a new home grown constitution because without that we cannot have a free and fair election nomatter how many foreign observers are accredited,” he said. |
