Zimbabwe's president Robert Mugabe has launched massive investigations into the matter surrounding the former Finance Minister and the senior member of Zanu PF, Simba Makoni's split from the ruling party and announcing his willingness to offer himself as a presidential candidate in the upcoming March 29 presidential elections.
State security sources say Mugabe, who is in his 28 th year of rule since independence met Makoni at an undisclosed place, so the president could hear the `news' from the `horse's mouth.' Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives have since been deployed to the Mujuru's residence in Dande- to search for information that may lead to the implication of Retired Army General Solomon Mujuru in backing Simba Makoni. “Mugabe had a meeting with Makoni on Wednesday, in which the president personally confronted Makoni on his move.” “Not much detail could be obtained as to what really transpired at the meeting, but the ageing leader was not `comfortable' with being challenged by Makoni in the presidential race,” he said. Simba Makoni, announced his interest to compete for presidency on Tuesday this week, in the capital. At a press conference, the presidential aspirant was accompanied by ex-Zanu PF heavyweights Ibbo Mandaza and Retired Major Kudzai Mbudzi. The security source cites Mugabe might have wanted to `scare' Makoni- who seems to be getting overwhelming support from all corners of the country. “The president was not happy at all citing how could this have happened and why,” he said. The Mujurus aka “Mujuru camp”- Vice President Joice Mujuru and her husband Solomon is reported to be linked to various attempts oust Mugabe and at the Zanu PF congress held in December last year, the Mujurus were implicated in a bid to block President Mugabe from seeking a fresh mandate.
Recently, police was also expected to have pressed charges for obstruction of justice against Solomon Mujuru for allegedly shielding banker, James Mushore. On Thursday morning, the state security official indicated they were to be sent to Dande that morning, to investigate the Mujurus. “The matter has become more serious now and the President is fuming. We definitely have to run around,” he said. The greater part of the beginning of this year witnessed the private media hinting Simba Makoni would `break up' from the ruling party and stand against Mugabe in the presidential elections. Some went to the extent of citing the former Finance Minister is being backed up by Solomon Mujuru and Ibbo Mandaza. This week, all this came true except for the Retired Army General's position which still remains unclear. “The rumours by the private media- which have turned out to be true in Makoni's case has prompted President Mugabe to believing Solomon Mujuru is really supporting Makoni,”added the source. Retired Major Mbudzi has since warned Mugabe's spy agency not to interfere with Makoni and that they would be dealt with accordingly in their individual capacity, if they use unorthodox strategies. |
