The MDC Mutambara faction has learnt a lesson from the on-going election results, that they have been surviving in politics in the MDC under Tsvangirai’s name as almost all of the faction candidates have lost the elections, especially to Tsvangira’s faction.

Most, if not all of once the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)’s big wigs aligned to Mutambara are now history after failing to secure seats in Parliament.

In the St Mary’s Constituency, Marvellous Khumalo (MDC Tsvangirai) got 6 508 votes thereby out classing ‘militia styled’ Job Sikhala (MDC Mutambara)

Welshman Ncube (MDC Mutambara) was cleanly beaten in the Makokoba Consitituency by Thokozani Khupe (MDC Tsvangirai). Ncube got 2 475 votes whilst Khupe had 4 123.

In the Bulawayo Central Constituency, Japhet Ndabeni Ncube (MDC-Mutambara) received 3 553 votes therefore losing to Dorcas Sibanda (MDC-Tsvangirai) who got 3 786 votes.

Another Mutambara faction member, Gibson Sibanda also lost a seat in Parliament.

Tsvangirai is a candidate in the 2008 Presidential election, facing Simba Makoni and the incumbent, Robert Mugabe.

In 1999, he founded and organized theMDC, an opposition party opposed to Mugabe's rule, and help for the unexpected triumph of the defeat of the 2000 constitution referendem, on which Tsvangirai campaigned for the 'no' vote.

Tsvangirai lost the March 2002 presidential election to Robert Mugabe of the ruling Zanu-PF party. The election provoked widespread allegations that Mugabe had rigged the election, through the use of violence, media bias, and manipulation of the voter's roll, leading to abnormally high pro-Mugabe turnout in some areas.

Statistics released by the ZEC shows that in most of the constituencies contested by the two MDC rival factions, Tsvangirai’s faction won the seats, or got more votes than Mutambara’s faction- where it did not win the seats.

In the Dangamvura-Chikanga Consitituency, Mutsekwa Giles (MDC Tsvangirai) won- getting 9 965 votes as opposed to Muza Nomore (MDC) who had 1 073 votes. The same also implies to many other constituencies.

In 2005 the MDC split into two factions following a dispute over whether or not to participate in the March 2005 parliamentary election. While MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, Authur Mutambara, and others opposed participation, Welshman Ncube and Gibson Sibanda led a faction that favored participation.

In February 2006, at a Congress of the breakaway faction, the rocket scientist, Mutambara was elected as President of the party.

After Mutambara and Tsvangirai failed to unite on a single MDC candidate for the March 2008 presidential election, Mutambara said on February 15 that he would not run for President and that his faction would instead back Makoni.

Sources said Mutambara’s withdrawal from the presidential race was an excuse as he was avoiding possible embarrassment owing to less people who would vote for him.

“Welshman Ncube and his colleagues including Mutambara indicated Tsvangirai did not have the intellectual capacity to lead the party, and so applies to the country.”

The Mutambara faction got together on the pre-text that they went to school and achieved a lot in education, and cannot be led by Tsvangirai.

“Whether, it is true or not, it has turned out that Tsvangirai is more popular and has the support of the people, therefore becoming a leader in his own right,” he said.

However, the two MDC factions’ split has facilitated the splitting of votes in many constituencies resulting in the ruling ZANU PF party capitalising on the situation and winning in such constituencies.
