Listening to the manifesto programmes that were being aired on Zimbabwe Television ZTV became a marvel and haven of enlightenment as candidates were lashing out at the current regime.

Though the station was airing more of the unknown contestants for reasons that we all know, these candidates were coming up with interesting arguments that are a pivot for debate even after elections. The level of thinking of these unknown candidates has left ZTV presenters namely Happison Muchechetere and Robson Mhandu with eggs on their faces as their leading questions were answered with deep thought and reasoning that what they have achieved to do is leave the current regime with no room to hide and with no clothes to cover their disabilities.

ZTV was airing candidates from ZPPDP, ZANU NDONGA, ZAPU FP and CDP and these minnows in the political scene of Zimbabwe were hammering home much sense and became more of opinion leaders and campaigners for either Tsvangirai or Makoni. During the last week Muchechetere asked the ZPPDP representative if the government could be blamed for the demise of the economy when the country is under sanctions. His answer was one worthy applauding as it went like so, “we don’t have sanctions as a country if I may correct you. What the government is calling sanctions are those targeted at individuals’ not economic sanctions and we wonder how the regime can hide under these sanctions saying they are the cause of our problems here. They are the cause not the over emphasized sanctions,” he said.

He went on to say that Zimbabwe when it was still Rhodesia, the regime then had real economic sanctions but it prospered yet today we have individual sanctions but we are going down. To him he said this showed something was wrong somewhere here not these said sanctions.

“The government is hiding their failures by saying that sanctions are causing this suffering when they do know where they are getting it wrong. Vatadza and we have other countries like Cuba which are under economic sanctions but they are prospering,” he said. Mhandu could not go further with his leading questions neither could he comment as facts were thrown straight into his eyes.

Earlier on Muchechetere had posed questions to the CDP candidate who in the process had said that if they were to be in power they would make the economy vibrant first by making sure production was increased so that products would flood the market. Muchechetere asked, “How can you say the regime has failed to enhance production when Zimbabwean products are flooding the markets of neighbouring countries. Is it not sabotage that has hampered the economy?” This question was so leading in nature but the reply was even better.

“What we are saying by making a vibrant economy is that even if we are to flood the foreign market with our products, the local market will have more than enough for itself. We are talking of massive production here to feed both markets,” he said.

Another observation from these candidates that was of interest was of why this country was suffering as it is when it has numerous precious stones namely diamond and gold being mined here. “How on earth can a country with so much mineral wealth suffer the way we are doing. Where is the money coming from the sell of these stones going to,” said the ZPPDP candidate. These programmes became something to look forward to as the little known candidates were saying all they could say about the ills of this country and the current regime without fear thereby enlightening people at home before they go to vote on March 29.
