Four candidates will fight for the hearts and minds of Zimbabweans in the Presidential race on March 29. The four, incumbent President Robert Mugabe, MDC's Morgan Tsvangirai, Independent Dr Simba Makoni and a virtual unknown, Langton Towungana.

The elections will be held on March 29 and will also feature parliamentary, senatorial and council polls.

Presidential aspirants Daniel Shumba of the United People’s Party, Abel Ndlovu of Peace Action Freedom for All, William Gwata of the Christian Democratic Party, and Advocate Justin Chihota all had their papers rejected.

Both Shumba and Adv Chihota were disqualified for missing the nomination deadline. They arrived at 4:30pm and 4:10pm respectively. The Nomination Court sat from 10am to 4pm.

Shumba, who pulled out of the ruling Zanu PF party a few years back to form his own party, has joined the band of political parties which fall silent in-between elections, only to rise breathing fire and sulk come election time.

Shumba forced all business to come to a halt when his nomination papers were rejected; arguing an accident in the Midlands had resulted in his delay to lodge his papers.

"We demand that my papers be accepted. This is a very serious issue. You cannot deny Zimbabweans the right to choose me as president," he said.

Shumba threatened to take legal action to force his way into the race. Gwata and Ndlovu were ruled ineligible because their papers were not in order.

MDC faction leader Arthur Mutambara will not participate in the presidential race but will contest in Zengeza East for an MP post. He said his faction of the MDC was supporting Makoni in the race. Makoni however, denied he was working with Mutambara's MDC.

Was it a GOOD idea for the MDC to drop out of the run-off elections?
