As March 29 draws near by the day, election fever is slowly gathering momentum in the country.

Zimbabwe Elections Voting Voter educators can be seen moving around different residential areas and primary elections for contesting parties have already started. Officials from Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) are moving around teaching people on how to check their names in the voters’ role. This includes moving around churches teaching people on what is required for them to be registered. Zanu PF is in the process of holding rallies everywhere with the Morgan Tsvangirai faction doing the same though not as constant as is being done by the ruling party. The party seems not to have dropped the theme that land is what people need and so they shall be given. This goes against the fact that all productive land was given to those with high ranks in Zanu PF and the masses were left out. Most people had to forcibly acquire land on their own but still farming inputs are not availed to them as they find their way to the party gurus at cheap prices and then they sell them at exorbitant prices to peasant farmers.

The government failed in its land redistribution programme to put into consideration the peasant farmer yet they are using the same theme to garner support. Also the ruling party is blaming opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai for all the problems this country is facing. “Let us defeat MDC once again as its leader has been on the rampage calling for sanctions against Zimbabwe. Look now electricity is going because of him,” was a statement from one Zanu PF Member of Parliament at a rally held in the rural areas. Though it is a fact that Tsvangirai asked for sanctions, they were purely against the ruling elite and so they are up to now, smart sanctions. The ruling party is sizzling to think that the country is no longer a net exporter but the opposite being true. This therefore means that the little foreign currency the nation has is failing to carter for its foreign needs that highly include the purchase of supplementary electricity from neighbouring countries.

MDC on the other hand is still going strong with its stance that Mugabe and his people have ruined this country. The need for a change in governance is still the bone of contention for the opposition party as they promise a government of good governance and rule of law. However this time around nothing much is being said by the opposition party on the land issue. It is truly of interest to many to know what the opposition party is going to do about the land reform programme if they happen to get into power. Much talk from MDC has been of boycotting the elections if what they want and agreed upon in the talks brokered by President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa are not met.

To add excitement in the Zimbabwean politics, Simba Makoni has finally gone public on his intentions to stand in the presidential election in March. This comes after days of speculation from both the media and the public. Though he has not renounced his membership from Zanu PF, Makoni is going ahead in challenging President Robert Mugabe in the elections.

Was it a GOOD idea for the MDC to drop out of the run-off elections?
