Patients are sleeping on the floor at Chitungwiza Central Hospital as the referral centre is failing to cope with the number of patients being admitted there.

On a recent visit to the hospital patients could be seen sleeping on the floor in Ward 2 which is for women and the situation is almost the same for all the other wards. Each cubicle in a ward is capable of having six patients but at the moment more than ten patients are housed in these cubicles hence some patients sleeping on the floor. A brief talk with one of the nurses revealed that beds have become inadequate for the all the patients coming to the hospital.

“All patients from surrounding rural areas are coming here ever since Chitungwiza hospital was upgraded from a general to a central hospital. This has seen us having a shortage of beds that is why some patients are sleeping on the floor like this and at the same time government hospital fees are too low that most people prefer to come here,” said the young nurse.

However, the hospital being central as it is, it does not have enough medicine for its patients. Most people are being told to buy their own medication and then come and have it administered for them at the hospital.

“Things are tough here my son. We are being told to buy our own medication and I have just done that from a pharmacy at Makoni shopping centre. They don’t have medication here,” said one elderly man who had come to see his ailing relative admitted at the hospital.

With the onset of the heavy rains the hospital is also having a massive mosquito problem which is a threat to the patients as well. These insects could be seen everywhere in the corridors and wards and the officials at the hospital seem to be doing nothing about it.

“We are fumigating this hospital from mosquitoes but we just cannot control them,” another nurse told The Zimbabwe Gazette.

The mosquitoes pose a danger to both visitors and the patients as they are capable of spreading whatever diseases they can carry in their tiny parasitic bodies. Another major worrying issue at the hospital is the smell of sickness that one gets in the nostrils the moment they get in the wards.

“Each time I come here I want to faint because of the smell that will be coming from the wards. You really feel that you are in a hospital with sick people but this is not the same for private hospitals like South Medical here in Chitungwiza or private hospitals and clinics in Harare,” said John Ushe who could not stand the smell and had to wait outside Ward 2 after he had visited a sick admitted relative.

This, most people are pointing, is being caused by lack of proper hygienic practices at the hospital.

“I wouldn’t want to be admitted here if I fell sick because the environment will worsen my condition,” said another lady commenting on the situation at the hospital.

The photograph with this story was taken in Ward 2 at Chitungwiza hospital using a camera phone and is evident of patients sleeping on the floor at the hospital.
