There was drama in a movie style during the weekend as mourners gathered at Doves Morgans funeral parlour in Harare resorted to all sorts of vehicle stunts 'celebrating' the death of a suspected cash baron, followed by high speed car chases with the police.

Investigations reveal the deceased was a well-known foreign currency trader in the capital.

At around 3pm on Saturday, all traffic entering the junction along Kwame Nkrumah and Harare Street was brought to a halt for about a cool 30 minutes as people gathered to watch mourners' cars skidding and speeding.

The mourners also used local bank notes and condoms to form a huge circle within the junction- where their cars would skid within the circle.

The vehicles included- Mercedes Benz, BMW, Mazda, Nissan and two kombis, were being driven by suspected foreign currency dealers who seemed to have been under the influence of alcohol.

One onlooker said he knows some of the foreign currency traders who were present among the mourners.

"I understand the person who died was their 'chief' and most of the people in the group are his followers," he said.

This reporter arrived at the scene well in time to witness the drama. The police had to be called in to disperse the 'wild' mourners on two occassions.

Though onlookers seemed to enjoy every second of the action, some motorists had to park their cars for safety's sake.

Eyewitnesses indicated the vehicle stunts were very dangerous and the police took little action to control the 'crazy' mouners.

"Someone could have been hurt or get killed if any of the drivers lost control of the vehicle."

"That is totally unacceptable and unfair also to other motorists who were forced off the road- fearing an accident with the 'stuntmen',"said Faith Mutasa.

As the mourners came out of the chapel after body viewing, most of them seemed to be in a jovial mood as compared to a few who broke down in tears.

Most of the mourners at the scene had pockets about to explode with cash- which is hard to come by these days.

Gainmore Chiware said he enjoyed the stunts especially by the BMW driver.

"He made the police look like fools as his car outpaced the Mazda police truck. At least, today I had something to smile about."

"I hope he will not get arrested because if he goes into the hands of the police, vanomurova pasi petsoka chaipo (they will beat him under his feet with baton sticks)," he said.

At first, police unsucessfully dispersed the mourners. The mourners continued with car stunts despite orders to stop. They shouted all sorts of abusive and vulgar words to the policemen- who took no action at all.

Minutes later, baton wielding riot police officers were deployed to the scene.

Again, the mouners defied the orders prompting the police to chase the vehicles in anticipation of arresting the drivers. Two policemen were busy taking down the registration numbers.

A six-wheeled state of the art Doves Morgans Mercedes Benz ferried the deceased' body in a casket.

The mourners then sped-off after the car chases. Only one person was arrested at that time.
