As the teacher strike continues, the teachers have resorted to chasing away students when they report for lessons.

A snap survey carried out by The Zimbabwe Gazette revealed that some schools are either locking their gates or locking classrooms such that students come and are forced to go back home. Some of these teachers have not been reporting for duty ever since the strike started. In some areas such as Chitungwiza where water has not been available for some days, the few schools that were offering lessons have also been forced to shut their gates to the students.

“We went to school today and we were told to go back home because firstly there is no water and secondly they don’t want to teach us till the government gives them what they want,” said one student from Seke 1 High in Chitungwiza.

A visit to the school saw a grounded school yard and locked gates.

“We are going kunotamba kuchikoro isu because teachers even if they allow us in they are not offering any teaching services.” said another student we talked to who is a student at a government school in Harare.

The strike by teachers has delayed the coming out of last years ‘O’ level results putting last year’s students into anxiety as they wonder when the results will come out or if they will get the correct results.

The incessant strikes by teachers are having a huge impact on the quality of education in Zimbabwe as little or no knowledge is being imparted to school children. The Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture headed by Aeneas Chigwedere has not done enough to address the concerns of the teachers who play a pivotal role in the shaping of the future of every person in the world. The teachers are demanding more money just like was given to soldiers but it seems as if the government is playing a deaf ear to their concerns. This has seen them as well as nurses and doctors going on strike regularly pressing for in-tandem with inflation salaries. The government had wanted to pacify the teachers as well as other major civil servants by giving them what they termed hefty salaries in light of the coming elections but these have since been eroded by inflation.

“They wanted us to play according to their tune as we are going towards elections but we won’t listen to them. We want more money that’s all and personally I have not set foot at work since the day this strike started,” said one teacher whom we cannot name for obvious reasons.

The strike is now roughly in its third week and the government is not doing much to address this other than going to the press and saying they are doing something to address the teachers concerns. The recent salaries awarded to soldiers and other civil servants have seen a sharp rise in prices of commodities as well as services as it is being believed that the government is printing more money to meet the huge salary bill they now have.
