The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has suspended for four semesters the president of the university’s student representative council (SRC) for allegedly leading a demonstration early this year.

Clever Bere, the president of NUST SRC was slapped with the suspension letter on Tuesday and his suspension comes two weeks after the university suspended four other SRC leaders.

Two weeks ago university authorities suspended the NUST SRC Vice President Mehluli Dube, the secretary general of the SRC Vivid Kwede for allegedly leading other students to take part in demonstrations at the university in May this year.

The other SRC leaders who were suspended last week include Kurayi Hoyi the student body’s Legal Affairs secretary and Themba Maphenduka a committee member in the SRC.

The other student leaders have been suspended for two semesters each.

The student leadership is accused of masterminding May demonstrations where students protested against high tuition fees that were being charged by the university leading to destruction of property at the university.

In the suspension letters, the university said the students contravened rules governing the conduct and discipline of students under Ordnance 30.

“At its tenth meeting the student Disciplinary Committee found you guilty of offences of engaging in conduct which was reasonably likely to be harmful to the interest of the university by unlawfully and intentionally throwing dustbins and other garbage on the driveway on the 9th day of May 2007 at National University of Science and technology Campus, Bulawayo, in Contravention of section 3.1.4 of Ordinance 30,” reads part of the suspension letter sent to Bere.

ZINASU has complained of a sustained campaign by state security institutions and university authorities to cow the student movement. The organisation has also announced that cases of student violations and student dismissals and suspensions have intensified at state funded tertiary institutions.
