Once christened The Sunshine City, Harare is fast changing into just any ordinary, typical African city.

NEW Harare Street Residents
Growing up in the early and late 90s, it was a marvel to be told that as children then, we were going to spend the day in Harare Gardens. The playing ground with merry-go-rounds and the built in tractor made life so heavenly. At one time we would go to the botanical gardens, spend the whole day there admiring nature and a visit to Mukuvisi Woodlands near Rhodesville police station assured you a complete outing package for a small Harare family.

For a view of the whole city an uphill walk to the peak of Kopje popularly known as Chikomo cheHarare would open a spectacular view of the whole of the Harare central business district as well as far off. Resting benches at Kopje were nicely kept and little rubbish if any was found. Flowers could be seen everywhere, the fish pond so refreshing and the sight of young lovers and young families picnicking there would make a marking impression on a young guy like me who was still in primary school then. Window shopping was a worthwhile event with less congestion in the town but now Harare has become a total eyesore to those who know its latter status.

Walking in the city today is no longer a pleasure as one is bound to fall into open trenches left by the city of Harare workers. Papers and dirty can be seen everywhere and with the onset of the rains the situation gets worse. One gets to wonder if the town fathers are doing anything at all to regain the status of the city.

Whenever there is a burst water pipe it takes some days to have it fixed and treated water can be seen gushing and flowing in the streets for days. If they dig a trench to repair a pipe it is being left like that for weeks on putting people in danger of falling in as well as distorting the image of the city. With street kids and families in vicinity Harare has been made just one simple city.

Recently along Inez Terrez there is a trench that has gone for days open and nothing seems to be taking place in terms of responds from the city authorities. Along Sam Nujoma near TM Supermarket water is flowing from the ground and nothing is being done about it. On George Silundika papers and dirty are everywhere to such an extent one would think they were at Magaba shopping centre in Mbare. Most traffic lights are not working and the blame is always put on unavailability of power. This has left many a drivers at danger of being in accidents at busy intersections especially during peak periods.

Places of interest such as Fantasyland & Eastgate no longer have their conveyer steps working. One is at pain to make it up to the movie rooms. The standards in the toilets are also decreasing. This is almost the same for most entertainment joints in the CBD. Harare Gardens which was for long a popular family outing is now a haven of love makers and street kids making it unpleasant to rest in.

Looking into hotels, even the five star ones are serving not at par meals with their regional counterparts. There no longer is value for money in Harare and in particular Zimbabwe. This all can point to one cause, the downfall of the economy coupled with flawed government policies. Local authorities with reference to Harare City council are not doing anything to help spruce up the image of the city. The only positive development in Harare is the near completion Joina City, an all under one housing complex. The complex is posing to improve the image of Harare and in particular Julius Nyerere way after it opens to the public. Of interest again is the fact that this complex is facing the Harare City council head office.
