Domestic violence should not be condoned as it is not our culture as said by SAfAIDS Zimbabwe Director Loice Chingandu.

She said that people should talk about and put an end to it as it is happening in our social circles. Though she could not elaborate whose culture it belongs to she said true African values encourage dialogue between married people than fighting. Addressing elderly people in Murewa recently in light of the ongoing 16 days against gender based violence she said, “It is not our culture for man to beat their wives neither is it right for women to do the same. But because we have been doing it for long it has become part of our everyday life and looks as if it’s normal when it is bad. Overseas people say Africans are not good communicators and always fight each other but is it really what we are,” she said. Elaborating further she said the issue of domestic violence no longer affects women alone as man are being beaten by their wives in their homes but are too shy to let it public.

According to her this is fuelling the spread of HIV as partners are engaging in promiscuous behavior knowing that they will use power of force to silence their spouses if asked. “Partners do not have a say in the behavior of their partners. They fear to be beaten,” she went on. This is making it difficult to enhance condom use in homesteads if one has a violent husband thus spreading the HIV virus. Chingandu encouraged people to follow the way things were conducted back in the days whereby elders where consulted if there was an issue that would cause disharmony between a couple. “Headmans, churches and elders let us help each other to instill harmonious living conditions in Zimbabwe. We have adopted the English way of living and dropped our native ways yet we are failing to live both ways as they should be. We are caught in between with nowhere where we are linked to or good at so elders should help us do the right thing,” she said.

Comments from people at the gathering highlighted issues such as lack of sexual activity as causing much of the disharmony between married couples. “Our wives sometimes refuse to have sex with us and we end up fighting,” said one man from the audience. Traditional healers were also blamed for upsetting houses as what will have been told one partner in the absence of the other can cause disharmony in the house. Cross border trading as well as careless usage of money from selling of farmed produce were also said to be fuelling domestic discrepancies that lead to fighting.

Zimbabweans have been commemorating 16 days against Gender Based Violence as from the 25th of November and they will stretch to the 10th of December. The focus of these days is mostly on women and children as they suffer the most due to domestic violence.
