The ever-increasing prices of properties in Zimbabwe has resulted in some of the most valued assets now fetching for trillions of dollars, a sharp increase from hundreds of billions, The Zimbabwe Gazette can reveal.
Zimbabwe Properties Zimbabwe's spectacular property price rise has seen the average house price going beyond the reach of many average citizens. To those who can afford, the steep increments have stretched many home buyers' budgets to the limit. A survey reveal, a three bedroomed flat in the Avenues area in Harare now costs $1.5 trillion. According to Kennan Properties, a two bedroomed house in Borrowdale is going for $1, 8 trillion. A cluster house in The Palms costs $940 billion. Bridges Real Estates indicate a three bedroomed house in Adbernnie costs $800 billion whilst other houses in low density areas are in the range of $500 billion. Houses in high density areas cost between $70 billion to $200 billion, on average. According to Property Heights Real Estates, a 2000 square meter stand in Borrowdale costs $400 billion.
Latest figures by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) revealed the year-on-year inflation rate for the month of January rose to another record just around 100 000 percent from the December 2007 figure of 66,212.3 per cent. Some individuals are also selling for example, a half acre residential stand in the uptown suburb of Gunhill at $130 billion. A 1000 square meter stand in Charlotte Brooke costs $60 billion and $100 billion for the same size in Zimre Park. A 2000 square meter serviced stand in the city of Marondera costs $60 billion and $40 billion in Ruwa. Many individuals who buy houses in the country are getting money from relatives in the diaspora, as no worker in Zimbabwe has been reported to be taking home a trillion dollars- so as to buy a house. At Royal Car Sales, a brand new Toyota hilux twin cab costs $1, 3 trillion. An Isuzu twin cab is going for $954 billion. A Mazda 323 second hand vehicle costs $55 billion. In a survey, generally, most second hand vehicles do not exceed $100 billion. The average income for a Zimbabwean worker is well below the Poverty Datum Line. Many workers including civil servants still earn salaries below $400 million a month, hardly enough to make ends meet for an average family of six.
In most shops in and around the capital, a 21 inch colour television is going for $2 billion whilst it is $3 billion for a 29 inch. A 14 inch colour TV costs $1, 5 billion. DVD players are going for not less than $500 million. In established shops like Station Furnitures and TV Sales and Hire a 21 inch colour TV costs not less than $4 billion whilst a DVD player costs around $2 billion. A four plate stove or a double door fridge fetches for around $6 billion. At Cellworld, a Nokia N95 costs $7 billion, $3, 7 billion for an N73, N70 mobile phone costs $3billion whilst a Samsung E250 costs $1, 7 million. On the parallel market, sim cards or lines are fetching for not less than $700 million each. Last year, the property sector was characterised by spiralling prices for both residential and commercial properties, a situation that has continued this year. Property experts say the situation is being propelled by the ever-increasing demand for complete properties against depressed supply. |
