Some banks
have started firing their employees after the Reserve Bank found
out about corrupt activities they have been into.
Dr Gideon Gono said that after his teams
came out with evaluations of how banks are operating, most of the
bank employees were found to be engaging into corrupt deals.
“As I speak now, some banks are in the process of
firing their employees who were found to be engaging in
corruption,” he alluded.
How some individuals were
being given more than the stipulated daily limits was of concern
leading to the corruption being unearthed. The governor also said
that some bank employees were siphoning money to corrupt deals at
the expense of the ordinary people. He went on to say most of these
big guns in the society including chefs from the ruling party were
in the habit of opening up as many bank accounts as possible under
different names for the purposes of speculative activities.
“Some big guys have accounts in the
names of their children who are six months old and one shudders to
think how on earth a six month old can spin money in their accounts
as we found out in our research,” said Dr Gono.
Others were said to be opening shelf
companies that are never known of what business they are into other
than to move money illegally.
Shops and manufacturers had their fair
share of blame when Dr Gono mentioned that these entities had
resorted to selling cash to the public. According to him some shops
were now in the habit of giving tremendous amounts of money to
individuals in the business of cash baroning creating cash
shortages to the general public.
A survey carried out by The Zimbabwe
Gazette came out with information substantiating the claims of
the governor vis-à-vis shops and manufacturer. A popular
Indian owned wholesale concern in Zimbabwe which is a household
name is said to be operating through corrupt means. The wholesaler
is said to be selling his goods in foreign currency when it is
prohibited in Zimbabwe and it is said that his employees who are
privy to the dealership ways of their employer are buying commuter
omnibuses as well as household items that their salaries cannot
buy. Such is the corruption levels that business principles and
ethics no longer apply to most business people in Zimbabwe.
Dr Gono on being asked if he would divulge
the names of the big guys he is always talking about that are into
cash baroning he said he knows three quarters of these people and
if asked before a parliament portfolio committee, he would name
them. He also blamed the system in the land at the moment as it was
letting him down on seeing that those caught to be engaging in
corrupt ways were brought to book. He also lambasted those doing
rounds buying forex on the black market saying g that they have
been sent by him.
“There are a lot of people doing
rounds saying they have been sent by the Reserve Bank and we have
their names and proper action shall be availed to them,” he
said.
Dr Gono had earlier on in the start of the
interview apologized to the suffering of most innocent people due
to the current cash shortages. He said it was his hope and the
central bank that all corruption vices will be dealt with in the
coming year. |
