Local protest poet Cde Fatso has released another scorching album, Chabvondoka with his new band with the same name.
 Cde Fatso The album, timely coming just before this month’s elections, explores the hardships and the economic crisis that Zimbabweans have had to endure under President Robert Mugabe’s repressive regime. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the album launch at Mannenberg Club in the capital recently, Cde Fatso said it was imperative that Zimbabweans come together and make sure that they have a voice in their destiny in the upcoming elections. "We are the masters of our own destiny and we should make sure that we strive for the best. People have seen how bad things are and they should be able to make their way forward. That defines a real and open democratic country," said Cde Fatso. A number of poetic songs on the album question the political and economic situation of the country that has seen a number of average Zimbabweans being reduced to scavengers. Cde Fatso whose real name is Samm Farai Monro is a rising poet in the Zimbabwe arts scene. Born in 1980 he spent most of his youth in Zimbabwe inspired by life and the struggle for justice. Cde Fatso calls his poetry Toyi Toyi Poetry, urban street poetry that mixes Shona with English, mbira with hip hop, poetry with the struggle to survive.
His poetry is the voices of the marginalized, the brutalized, the street kid, the abused maid. His poetry is insurrection. The last few years have seen the blossoming of his performance poetry career with regular performances at the Book Café, a performance at the launch of the Zimbabwe Culture Fund 2004 and a performance at the ZIBF last year to mention a few. He has performed at HIFA in the Poetry Café alongside Chirikure Chirikure (Zim) and Zolani (SA) while doing live poetry collaborations with the renowned French slam poet Pliote le Hot. Cde Fatso also performed Our Word is Our Weapon in the National Gallery at HIFA, a piece of poetry theatre done in collaboration with Biko Mutsaurwa and Victor Mavedzenge. The poet’s performances saw him invited to perform in France and the UK on several occasions while he has also performed at the National Poetry Grand Slam in Lilles, France where he was awarded the poet d’honneur.
Cde Fatso then had other performances at Abracadabar and the Pleine Lune, Paris. In the UK he performed at the Fringe Bar and the Bombay Bar, Brighton, while also performing at Resistance: Music Under Siege in Westminster, London, alongside Zimbabwean musician Chiwoniso Maraire. He has also taken part in projects like Discarding the Filth, the Murambatsvina documentary, at the Frontline Club, London. He then proceeded to win the gold medal for best poet at the Hammer and Tongues Poetry Slam, Somerset. The poet and musician has a long success history and he has been able to steal the hearts of many poem and music lovers across the world. |
