Mambokadzi’s star continues to shine.
After a successful restructuring programme, the group has now set
its eyes on conquering the region.
On Thursday the six-dancer
outfit left the country for a one-week tour of South Africa that
would see them performing in different venues in Johannesburg.
The first show was scheduled for last
night at Randburg Club in Johannesburg where they were expected to
share the stage with waning dancer and musician Sandra Ndebele.
Tonight the group is expected to return to
the same venue without Sandra while tomorrow night it is expected
to take part in a regional festival at Hillbrow Theatre.
On Monday and Tuesday they will have shows
in two other venues that the SA promoters were still to
confirm.
Mambokadzi founder and director Enisia
Mashusha said the trip had been long overdue since the promoters
had invited them to perform in SA last year.
She said they had already signed deals for
local commitments and had to complete the assignments before
crossing the Limpopo River.
“We were very busy
here late last year when they invited us to SA and we had to settle
for March this year to go for the trip. They have promised great
things and we have also done a lot of preparation for the tour and
we hope it will be successful.”
“This is our first time to travel to
SA and we hope the trip will prepare the ground for any future
tours to that country,” said Mashusha.
She added that the tour was part of their
regional campaign that saw the group travelling to Botswana and
Mozambique last year.
"We did a number of shows in Mozambique
and Botswana last year and this tour is an important starting point
for the regional programme this year. We are hoping to travel to
other regional countries as the year progresses," said
Mashusha.
The group’s previous tours were
reportedly very successful and they are likely to return to
Mozambique and Botswana among other regional assignments this
year.
Mambokadzi has already built a good fan
base locally and this saw them sharing the stage with most of the
popular musicians locally.
The group also did a musical video and
their dual approach saw them being nominated for three awards at
the recently held National Arts Merit Awards. |
