Local jazz joint, Jazz 105 last week honored Sam Mtukudzi for releasing his debut album Rume Rimwe at the fifth anniversary celebration of the Jazz Shop.
Sam Mtukudzi Honored Sam has been a constant figure at the entertainment spot where he started playing some years back when he was still a member of the Prince Edward Jazz Band. On the anniversary gig, Sam played alongside a number of other jazz musicians but there was a special honor for the youngster who has managed to make a mark at the early days of his profession. Although he has performed at different other joints independently or as backing singer to his father Oliver, Sam has made Jazz 105 his second home where he stages shows regularly. Jazz 105 director Josh Hozheri said the joint honored the youngster for the persistence and hard work that have seen him standing on his own after a weaning from the school band.
"We have not seen many musicians rising beyond that level. The Prince Edward Jazz Band has a number of talented musicians and most of them just take that art as a ‘school thing’ but Sam has been able to take it a step further." "He has been able to form a youthful band that he has maintained for over a year and we are proud of the youngster. Although he is son to Oliver, we view him as an independent musician who has defied the odds to maintain the standards he set when he was still a student." "It is indeed a great achievement and we would like to congratulate him for releasing his debut album," said Hozheri. He added that Sam’s album has been selling well at the shop hence the need to celebrate his breakthrough.
Jazz 105 houses the Jazz Shop that opened on February 4 2003. A number of activities have been held each year to celebrate the opening of the shop that sells has become a central selling point to jazz music. "When we started we only had international jazz artists’ albums in the shop but it is encouraging to note that a number of local artistes have now recorded albums which are available on the market. "Many groups that play at the club also have a number of albums in the shop and we are happy for such a development," said Hozheri. |
Go Sam!
