The concert which was held at Pakare Paye Arts Centre which is owned by popular musician Oliver Mtukudzi was said to be a huge success. The show called upon the youths to participate in the harmonized presidential and parliamentary elections penciled for the 29th of March 2008 as they are a critical constituency in sharing the country’s destiny.

The concert which was a free for all had artists like Sandra Ndebele, Willom Tight, Sam Mtukudzi who is son to Oliver Mtkudzi, Mambokadzi, Roki, Sniper, Knox, Sani Makhalima, Mafrik, Leonard Mapfumo, Trevor dongo, Stunner, XQ, Ngoni Kambarami, Cindy, Umoja Ensemble and many more. The show started at 12 noon on Saturday and ended late in the night. The artists’ composition clearly shows that this initiative is youth centered as most youngsters who have reached voting age do not know the importance of voting yet their vote counts a lot in the development of Zimbabwe.

Crisis Coalition Zimbabwe has been for long been holding these concerts as elections draw near. Late last year they held shows in Bulawayo and Chitungwiza in which police tried to limit the number of people who wanted to enter the shows. Crisis Coalition is a non-governmental organisation that has been on the forefront of playing a watchdog role on human rights issues in Zimbabwe. The stance of this organisation has to some effect been labeled anti-government hence the skirmishes earlier on with the police when they hosted rock the vote shows. Talking with officials from this organisation revealed that this initiative is purely non partisan but focused on assuring that the youths were made aware of their right to vote and its importance to them. “Youths are also affected by what happens on a day to day basis of their lives so we are encouraging those who have reached voting age to exercise their right to vote in the coming elections so that they have someone whom they will have chosen as well,” said the official from Crisis Coalition. More shows are lined up through the country as elections draw near.

Most elections have been met with voter apathy mostly from the youths who do not value or see the importance of voting. In all past elections people of middle age as well as old people have been the ones seen in lines waiting to vote whilst the youths make fun of them or gather in social groups to make merry. Zimbabwe’s population is filled with youths and middle aged people hence the need for the youths to know the importance of voting.

This year Zimbabwe is having harmonized elections for parliamentary as well as the presidency. This comes after it was seen that the country could not have parliamentary elections in 2010 where they were constitutionally penciled for whilst the soccer world cup was taking place in South Africa. Zanu PF has already aired out those who are going to be standing for the party in the presidential as well as parliamentary elections.
