The editor of Sunday Mail, a Zimpapers weekly publication is witch hunting for a reporter who works within but has been moonlighting for Zimdaily.

Sources within the newspaper said that two weeks ago in the diary session that always takes place, there was no seeing eye to eye as the editor of the paper William Chikoto wanted to know who gave Zimdaily a picture that was exclusively for Sunday Mail but found its way to this internet based publication. “Sunday Mail carried out a story in which people in Mhondoro are using human excretion as manure. However the picture for that story came out on Zimdaily,” said our informant. Chikoto is said to have been summoned to George Charamba's office where he was asked to explain how he could allow a story like that to come in the state owned publication. It is said the story Charamba observed, would portray the government in bad light as it would show the shortage of farming inputs in Zimbabwe.

However the picture that was taken by Sunday Mail photographer Eddie Muzerengi is the one that accompanied a story on Zimdaily which talks of Chikoto’s ordeal with Charamba. It is said Chikoto wants to know how a picture taken by their photographer could be on Zimdaily. The reporter who went for the human waste manure story with Muzerengi was Tafadzwa Chiremba. This incident is said to have made the situation in the SundayMail newsroom tense as the hunt for the Zimdaily correspondent goes on. A number of Zimpapers reporters have turned to moonlighting as a way of livelihood as the profession is not paying in Zimbabwe. This though comes with a lot of risk for the reporters as this is against the stipulations of the contracts they sign as well as the regulations from Media Information Commission that are stipulated under AIPPA for practicing journalists in Zimbabwe.

On another issue Zimdaily on Friday two weeks ago again carried out a story that was hitting hard on a story I wrote that went Split keeps Mugabe from Retiring. Though it is noble for one to scrutinize what one will have written let me say that Zimdaily’s article has a lot of misquotes. Never did I ever talk with the reporter one Hatirebwi Nathaniel Masikati or write down in my story the quotes he wrote in paragraph three of his story. Though alternatives can come out of the ruling party, it is also a fact that the old man has been the only single force holding together Zanu PF by whatever means available at his disposal. On the next paragraph he goes on to say that I wrote that corruption is the issue at the helm of the squabbles within Zanu PF of which this is inconclusive of scrutiny of the facts in my story. Though I did not plain blank write that it is power hungriness as he states that is causing the discord in Zanu PF, the facts in my story do not only talk of corruption but in-house squabbles and splits as well. I never concluded that it was corruption alone but that corruption was part of the cause of the squabbles within Zanu PF.

My story in its early paragraphs states that because of the many factions in the party now, President Mugabe saw it right to have another go though he would have loved to retire. Zimdaily goes on to say that I said Tendai Biti wants to join Mugabe in a government of national unity. This again is scrutiny gone wild as in my story I just was laying down facts as they were. If I were to ask what does a government of national unity mean, is it not that top opposing parties in a country agree to work together though they may share different ideologies? And politics being just that, politics, what could stop Biti from wanting a position in a government of national unity? One thing Mr Masikati failed to see is that I mentioned the neutrality of Tendai Biti in the talks currently taking place not him being an ally of Mugabe.

With all due respect, the Zimdaily reporter seems to have a vendetta with The Zimbabwe Gazette as he goes on to say that government is coming up with websites it sponsors that spread “a cacophony of cyberspace misinformation” and by scrutinizing this statement he includes The Zimbabwe Gazette. Is Zimdaily afraid that a new website with an aggressive new dimension on news in Zimbabwe and with facts and sources as well as quotes is coming up? Instead of sourcing for news Masikati saw it right to undress The Zimbabwe Gazette. What sources did he quote in his story other than do down my story? As stated in my story, those facts came from someone who works right deep in the heart of the state security agency and I quoted what he was saying.

It would be my pleasure that Hatirebwi Nathaniel Masikati focuses on sourcing news items for his website rather that spend time thieving stories from other sites and expand on them to make his own stories. This is no time to mingle into other peoples business but bring the real news to the people Mr. Masikati.
