One of Zimbabwe’s leading musicians Tongai Moyo is suffering from cancer and is taking chemotherapy treatment as he battles with the life-threatening ailment, The Zimbabwe Gazette can reveal.

After months of speculation as to what is making the charming sungura ace loose weight and cancel shows regularly we have established that Moyo is suffering from a condition known as Non Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which is also known as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, NHL, or sometimes just as lymphoma, is a cancer that starts in cells of the lymph system, which is part of the body's immune system.

In confirming his condition the award winning Moyo vowed to join the elite league of people who have successfully fought cancer maintaining that lose of hair that is being caused by the ailment will not affect his style and elegance.

With his hair cells having been affected by the disease to such an extent that even a toddler can pull of his hair Moyo is now sporting a clean- head as opposed to the trademark box cut.

“After months of investigations the doctors have finally informed me that I have Non Hodgkin Lymphoma as condition that is caused by being exposed to too much cigarette smoke and I have already started getting treatment."

“I was shocked with the news at first but now I am relieved because at least I know what is I am suffering from and how I can go about it. As I battle for my health I have already started taking chemotherapy twice much."

“And the signs of recovery are there because unlike late last year now I am capable of playing for three hours non stop like I did during my tour of the United Kingdom during the New Year,” said Moyo.

The elegant Moyo suspects that he is paying the price for being exposed to smoke in night clubs and pubs he regularly plays in but insists that he is not yet ready to hang up his guitars just as yet.

Contrary to expectations the Kwekwe based musician says although he is currently on a one month sabbatical as January is usually a slow month for live shows he will use his spare time to rehearse songs for his forthcoming album.

“I quit my job as an account clerk at Kwekwe general hospital to pursue music so the stage is my workplace and I cannot afford to call it a day when I still have the ability to play."
“We are on a one month break at the moment but there is no seating back as the group Utakataka Express will be rehearsing songs for our new album as well as perfecting our stage perfomance in preparation for our return to live shows sometime in February,” said Moyo.

On his much publicised fall out with fellow sungura giant Alick Macheso Moyo once again reiterated that he is ready to share the stage with Cheso Power anytime pointing out that he has in the past unsuccessfully tried to iron out the differences with his fellow musician,

“Macheso is a brother to me and I helped him to launch Orchestra Mberikwazvo and there is no way I can be jealous of his success because I am also a successful musician in my own right,” he said.
